I was curious so I ran a spreadsheet to figure out how many resources a gem can buy using the different ways. Here is what I found.
Gold and elixer
If you use gems to buy 10% full you will get 1300 resources per gem if you use gems to fill your coffers you will get 1731 resources per gem if you have 6 lvl 11 mines you and you double the production you will get 6545 resources per gem that will come in over 24 hours
if you have 6 level 11 mines you will produce 432k in gold and 432 k in elixir every day. You will double that for 132 gems. So that means that 132 gems will get you 864,000 more resources
For dark elixir I had 3 options
Fill 10% 11.2 DE per gem Fill 50% 16.66 DE per gem Fill 100% 22.59 DE per Gem
If I double my production on my lv2 mine it costs 15 gems and would yield 1080 more DE per day. This equates to 72 DE per gem
So it is a better deal to increase production than it is to buy resources with gems
